MIYAWAKI FOREST CELEBRATION
Celebrate the first summer of the Miyawaki urban forest. Learn about a Miyawaki Urban Forest and see what’s growing as we stir up the earth with sounds of drums from different cultures. Enjoy an evening of drumming and learning.
We are celebrating the first summer of the Miyawaki Urban Forest that was planted by community in December 2023.
Program: Seattle Kokon Taiko (Japanese percussion instruments) and JHP Legacy (Ghanian percussion instruments) see what’s growing as we stir up the earth with sounds of drums from different cultures.
This is an outdoor event. Bring a picnic and blanket, or purchase food at the event. There will also be activities for all ages, tours of the Miyawaki Urban Forest and informational booths.
Seattle Kokon Taiko
Seattle Kokon Taiko (SKT) formed in 1980 and is Washington’s first performing taiko ensemble. SKT is based in the local Japanese American community and has performed at schools, arts festivals, street fairs, community programs, corporate events and in concert throughout Washington and Oregon.
JHP Legacy
JHP Legacy is an arts organization based in Shoreline that provides culturally unique showcases/performances through dance and music. On Saturday, June 29, 2024, JHP Legacy will perform live Ghanaian drumming at Shoreline Historical Museum’s Summer Forest Celebration. We are thrilled to perform “FumeFume”, this is a traditional musical piece created by the Ga people of Accra, Ghana. It is performed to ask God's blessings on mankind. Secondly, JHP shall perform Kpanlogo. Kpanlogo is a traditional drum/dance piece that emerged among the Gas in the 1960's shortly after Ghana's independence in 1957. It was created and performed by the young people as a form of entertainment and for the purpose of socialization after a hard day’s work. Our third piece is ??
